9 Weeks Out

Hi all. It's been awhile since I posted. It's kind of nice to not be obsessing over my teeth so much. I told my husband that I don't want to talk about my teeth unless I bring it up. haha He said, "That's weird. That was all you wanted to talk about for the past year". Yep, he's tired of this too. We have been busy though. We went on vacation to visit family and I had my 47th birthday. Forty-seven and I still have braces on. Yuck.

It's been a year since I got my braces on. I remember the first thing I did after my braces were on was to ride the COG Railroad up to the top of Pikes Peak. I have already decided that will be the last thing I do to finish off my braces journey. That will be like a round trip up and back from the Peak. Symbolic in a way.

Things have been going really well. I still have some tingling in my chin, but the feeling is continuing to improve. I am eating quite a few things. It's still hard to get my teeth and tongue working together and my mouth opening wide enough. I still have to push food between my teeth to get it into my mouth.

I will see my surgeon this Wednesday. I haven't seen him since about 3 weeks after surgery. I am planning on asking him about my lips not coming together. I think they are closer together now, but still not perfect. I did notice my top lip was very thin for awhile and it's getting fuller now. That helps.

I was feeling my head the other day and I noticed I have a big dent from where they cut my bone graft. It's probably 1" x 4". I sure hope that fills in. It doesn't hurt though. I'm only wearing 2 rubber bands at night only. My smile is now looking a little more natural. I don't find myself covering my mouth when I smile like I did before surgery. That is so awesome. I just smile real big and show my teeth braces and all without being embarrassed. That in itself makes this surgery so worth it!

I hope everyone is doing well!

  1. Hi June!
I can so relate to the obsessing of the teeth and jaw surgery! I am right in the thick of that. My wife walked by and saw your picture and said "she is beautiful" and I agree you are looking great! I am glad to hear that you are having continued improvement on your healing. Does the eating/chewing part bother you?
    Regards,
    Brent

  2. Happy birthday! I really like the sound of your COG railroad trip, nice and symbolic, as though you'll be officially closing that chapter of your life - I might borrow that idea and go back to the restaurant I visited on my first night in braces :)

The picture looks fab, and btw glad you're enjoying your new smile. I know the feeling of being fed up discussing teeth, now the surgery is over there's definitely a strong feeling that it's time to move on...

As for the numbness and eating, it's only been 2 months (it feels a lot longer, I know!), so it'll all come back. Good luck with the surgeon!

PS - any idea when the braces might be coming off?

  3. June, it's great to see how well you're doing, and how great you look. I'm on vacation, and my friends couldn't believe your before and after pictures. Can't wait to get to the point you're at.

  4. Thank you guys! You are all so kind. Brent - tell your wife "thanks". Chewing/eating is not too bad, it's just learning how to eat all over again. It doesn't really bother me it's just slow.
Discantus - cool about the restaurant. I just felt like it would be like closing a chapter of my life by doing the COG Railroad. Hope you're doing well.
Louise - Thank you. It really is a big difference. You'll be there soon. Keep in touch. How are your braces?

  5. Hi June! I had surgery a week ago to correct my overbite and openbite and I'm having the same issue with my lips not coming together. I asked my surgeon about it even before I left the hospital and he said that once the swelling went down that they'd be fine. I'm still waiting to see that result! Your profile looks great! You must be so happy that you are through the worst of it! I can't wait to hit your point! :)

  7. June, thanks for asking about my braces- my family doesn't want to hear about it anymore! I got my last bands on, and one last bracket on a lower tooth. My wire popped off yesterday, so I need to call Monday.I tucked the wire behind a bracket so it doesn't poke my cheek, but it moves when I eat. My teeth have moved really quickly, even my dentist agrees. It's amazing considering how crowded they were.I think it's also why I have been in such pain. The last one they just bracketed actually moved into its place by that night. They're all aligned, now they have to close gaps and move sideways. Thanks for listening! Louise
